Days Out in Somerset

There is no more authentic Somerset experience than visiting Roger Wilkins cider farm on the edge of the Somerset Levels at Mudgley under 3 miles from Godney and not too far from Cheddar Gorge. Ok so our cat is called Roger as his mother came from the farm and Roger is such a genuine and affable man who wouldn’t want their cat named after him? You turn up at Roger’s farm which has been in his family for neigh on 1000 years according to Roger, and you will immediately be offered a free half pint of Wilkins cider either dry, sweet or medium. Whilst you are standing by the huge wooden cider vats look down and you will notice how the concrete floor has been eaten away by the constant drip of cider falling from the tap… the cider may not taste strong but if it has that effect on concrete then say no more! Buy cider to take home or fab local chedder cheese and jars of pickle. This farm was one of Jo Strummer’s favourite hang outs has been visited by Jamie Oliver, John Lydon Sex Pistols, Chris Jagger bro of Mick, Ed Speleers and the Downton Abbey crew to name but a few.

Directions: A couple of miles north of Godney on the A3151 after Westhay there will be a small sign in the hedge, you may get lost but don’t give up it’s worth it when you get there.

If your hearts desire is a fresh Somerset cream tea then look no further than The Chantry tea rooms at Kilve beach just on the edge of The Quantocks. Set in the gardens among crumbling ruins of an ancient chantry it is both peaceful and quirky. You may need to adjust your time scale and be a little patient and wait for service after you have rung the bell at the back door of the farm but chill out and enjoy this special place it is so much better than your average coffee shop. Light lunches or delicious home made cream teas and very reasonably priced and you wont be asked if you want to have their loyalty card either!
